The folks at Disney Music Emporium have compiled a brilliant collection of songs from The Little Mermaid, one of my all-time favorite Disney movies, so I naturally jumped at the chance to be able to review this new release. The Little Mermaid brings back some great memories- and the music is naturally a big, big part of that. And great news- they’re giving me a copy to give away to one lucky reader- keep reading to find out more! Being a redhead of course everyone always made me play Ariel when did did make believe and honestly, I wasn’t complaining because I love her.

The two disc set comes packaged in a handsomely-bound hardback ‘book’ that fits the CD’s inside, and lists the contents for each disc. The cover art is a new interpretation of The Little Mermaid and its a really lovely look. This art theme is continued throughout the lyrics booklet that comes with the set- lots of fish illustrations and scenes from the story. This was really appealing to me- I love that they’ve targeted the illustrations in a unique way. It makes it feel less like listening to a soundtrack for children and more like listening to a big ole dose of nostalgia, which is exactly what this CD set is to me. Ursala is still my favorite Disney villain. She had such sass and she did exactly as she wished. She always reminded me of my grandmother and now that my Nanny is gone every time I see this movie I will think of her.

I loved The Little Mermaid so much when it was released, and watched it so many times I know the lyrics unprompted and by heart. But the lyrics booklet is certainly helpful if you don’t; it will allow you to sing along with one of the most singable soundtracks Disney has ever produced. From an adult perspective, it’s a lot of fun to be able to listen to the unpolished demos that the Disney Music Emporium has included on this release- it’s pretty cool to be able to hear what the composers were doing before they developed the finished songs. Also from an adult perspective, I got to sing along with Les Poissants at the top of my lungs for the first time in a long time and it was AWESOME.

This set will also appeal to kids, naturally, since it’s familiar Disney music. But I think this set was designed and intended for adult fans of Disney, or grownups that loved the movie as kids and want a chance to listen to the music and enjoy it again. No shame there, this is well-composed music and is tons of fun to revisit, either with your kids or solo. It has been 25 years since The Little Mermaid was released. 25 YEARS! I feel so old because I remember when this movie came out. Just reading the words in the beginning of the CD ‘book’ from the composer and writers and learning the origins of the movie have made me glad that this is something I can share with my children. Something that maybe 25 years from now they would still want to share with their children.

The entire Legacy Collection, including The Little Mermaid, is available in the new Disney Music Emporium. It’s really worth checking the website out- there are more titles available, and more coming, and they all seem to be aimed at us grownups who want a little more out of our Disney music than a regular children’s CD can provide. Sadly my kids still take the things I love most and make it their own. I am half way excited that they want to be like me and half way like a jealous sibling who does not want to share.

Because I want to share my love and because they are allowing me to, I get to give away a copy of The Little Mermaid Legacy Collection CD. Just follow the directions below to enter to win your own copy  from The Disney Music Emporium!
