There is a popular misconception floating around that once you begin your vacation or travels it becomes impossible to stay healthy and eat well. It turns out that the opposite is true and if you can eat healthy and stay fit at home you will have no problem following the same lifestyle when you’re traveling. By combining common sense with a small amount of effort you can easily eat healthy and tasty foods while avoiding things that aren’t as good. Here are some steps you can take to ensure you’re getting enough exercise on vacation and to guarantee you will be making the right food choices. Laziness is the major reason why people will eat terribly on vacation or while traveling and I am guilty of it myself. Many travelers will choose the fast food or greasy option because it is quick and easy and if you’re in a rush you can’t be wasting time looking for something good to eat. Being proactive and making sure you have healthy and tasty snacks will help you curb cravings and satisfy your appetite until you can get a full meal in. Stopping by the local grocery store and grabbing some fruits and vegetables is almost as easy as popping into a fast food place for a burger and fries. When I was growing up, my grandmother always took a dozen grandkids on vacation so we couldnt afford to eat out. We always hit the grocery store where ever we went. While finding healthy foods might take a little longer, your body will thank you later and your wallet will as well. If you’re fortunate enough to have a kitchen or cooking supplies where you’re staying you can take full advantage of them and eat the same healthy meals you would at home. If you are forced to eat out there are always plenty of healthy options no matter where you go. In Mexico you can substitute the rice for vegetables, in Europe you can substitute the fries for salads, there really isn’t anywhere you will eat that won’t have a healthy option on the menu. If you’re traveling for a week you don’t have to pay as much attention to what you’re eating versus if you’re traveling for 6 months. Over time your body will thank you for making the right choices and you’ll have a happier and more productive trip.

Staying hydrated and daily exercise also goes a long way towards maintaining and even improving your health while traveling or on vacation. We walked the entire time we were in Germany.  Every single picture I have is from us walking.  We even parked at the bottom of a mountain (it felt like it) and walked up to two different cities and their awesome shops. At home many people exercise but don’t get nearly the amount of exercise in compared to when you will be walking around beautiful cities and exploring the sites. Try to walk everywhere and avoid public transit if possible. If this is not an option for you there are many hotels that have gyms you can take advantage of and even the places your visiting will have gym opportunities for tourists. Stretching is also a great way to start the day off and will help rejuvenate your body after its daily abuse. Drinking water and keeping hydrated will guarantee your mood stays elevated and you don’t suffer from the symptoms of dehydration. Drinking lots of water is also great for your joints and muscles, which will be taking a beating after your long days of walking. Finally, making sure you get enough sleep and taking care of your body will let you enjoy the trip as much as possible. Being sore and tired is a great way to ruin your day and it’s much easier to enjoy yourself if you’re well rested and feeling great.
