MY REVIEW:
When I first did the promo for this book I thought that I would be reading something not unlike a history textbook. I was worried it would be boring or that it would be too religious. The Spirit of a Sultan is about the true account of a saint, Sultan Bahu, whose journey is simply awe-inspiring. It was amazing to read so much of another culture especially written by someone who writes it so beautifully like Ahmad Javid (Sarwari Qaderi). Before reading I only knew a little bit about the Muslim religion and even less about Sufism. I took a class in college which based highly on great influencers of modern religion and I did my 25 page thesis paper on Guatama Buddha. Of course I have forgotten almost all of it but a lot of the research I did came back to me reading this and I could see how Sultan Bahu was going down the path of true enlightenment like Buddha. This book was not the dry history I thought but rather a beautiful storybook encounter of a man’s quest. I could see the beauty in his faith. This book will really get you to sit back and think of where you are in your own religion and life and wonder how you can further yourself. This book truly shows readers how to connect with this spiritual side and extend their own journeys towards a fulfilling life. I loved reading through Sultan Bahu’s life and all the steps he took along the way. He gave all materials possessions up to lead a life of learning and teaching and I just cant imagine what that must have been like. The descriptions of all the holy shrines were amazing. I could almost see them in my mind and feel like I was there. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a deeper spiritual connection or anyone wanting to read about a great man who found a path a to God and worked his way there selflessly.
