Interview with Ed Oxenbould, Dylan Minnette & Kerris Dorsey #VeryBadDayEvent

Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several press events for Disney. All opinions are 100% my own. #VeryBadDayEvent

Just sharing the good news that Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day opens in theaters on October 10th! During my #VeryBadDayEvent trip was able to interview the ‘kids’ of the movie,Ed Oxenbould, Kerris Dorsey, and Dylan Minnette.  As soon as they walked in, I could see the awesome camaraderie between them.

They all laughed the whole interview which made me feel better because I was still pretty nervous about interviewing famous people. The first question we asked them was if Steve Carell was really fun to work with.

Ed OxenbouldNo, he wasn’t fun– no, I’m kidding. He was like the funniest person. He could make anything sound fun, anything.

Dylan MinnetteIt’s effortless. It’s effortless. He can say what he’s having for lunch and you’re just like in tears on the floor.

Ed OxenbouldYeah, you could  just look at him. And he’ll give you one look. And you will just be in uncontrollable laughter.

Kerris DoseyYeah, and he’s so like one thing is he’s so smart. He’s such a smart person. I think you have to be that intelligent in order to be that funny because it’s so witty and so like impeccable. Um, so that was really cool. You can just tell by looking at him, like talking to him that’s he’s just so smart. And the wheels are always turning.

I agree. When I told my husband that Steve Carell had us laughing as soon as he walked in for our interview with him and Jennifer Garner, he asked what he said that was so funny.  Truth is, I don’t even remember. I think it was just him walking in and we all started rolling on the floor.

It is super funny to me that Ed Oxenbould was an Austrailian actor playing an American boy who loves all thing Australian.  We found out that that was just an uncanny coincidence though.  One of the funniest scenes of the movie is when Kerris Dorsey’s character is playing Peter Pan. A very drunk on cough syrup Peter Pan.  She told us that scene was the one she looked forward to the whole time they were filming. Kerris said that everyday she would ask if they were doing the scene with the harness and it turned out to be the last day of filming.  In true friend fashion, the boys weren’t even filming that day and they showed up to watch her ‘fly’ to laugh.  I think it was worth the wait though.

The kids said that the scene that was the hardest to keep their compsoure was the one in the car where they all start making funny noises. I almost broke a rib laughing when I saw that scene so I can imagine how hard it was to film. One of my other favorite scenes was the one after Dylan epically fails his driver’s ed test.

Dylan Minnette – Also the scene outside the van at the DMV when we were all yelling at each other.

Kerris Dorsey – Oh my God, yes, that was so–

Ed Oxenbould – Ohhhhhh. We spent a whole day filming there.

Kerris Dorsey – We had to isolate it so that, you know, you could hear the sound of everyone so we didn’t have to like go back in post and do it. So Dylan would do his part. And we would all have to like mime talking. And then when Steve did his part, literally, I could not– you had to be normal and like yelling at him.

Dylan Minnette – Well, he was he was like yelling at me like about about crashing the van improvising. And I’m off camera. And I’m just– feel so bad ’cause I’m near tears on the ground laughing. And he’s still yelling at me on camera not breaking character. It was just– that was so difficult.

Kerris Dorsey – Oh my God. I just wanted them to like never call cut so we could just keep going. It would’ve been funny for like two more hours if– at the least.

I think one of the best things in the interview was how friendly they were with each other. Like real siblings. They were stealing each other’s water and nudging each other.  You could tell they had the best inside jokes because they would look at each other and not say anything but the other person would laugh or smile like they knew exactly what they were thinking.  One of the questions we asked them was what was your take away personally for each and every one of you from this movie working with fabulous, you know, cast and the director?  And Kerris says, ‘this’ and she hugs Ed Oxenbould.  We all just died of the cuteness.

Ed Oxenbould –  This, this friendship.

Dylan Minnette – Aw!

Ed Oxenbould –   Yeah.

Dylan Minnette – Get out. Uh, no, really, though, I mean I– it’s– honestly, it– that’s true because I– I can’t– now that we’ve done this, I can’t imagine not doing it because we have become such good friends that I literally can’t imagine not having the experiences that we’ve had after filming. Like it’s such a strange thought that we all just happened to– it was kinda like fate. It’s kinda weird to say. But it really was fate because we’re really close.

Kerris Dorsey –   It’s cool to have a movie that, you know, you are proud of and you enjoyed making. And then literally to walk away and go I’m like– my life would be completely different if I hadn’t done that movie ’cause I wouldn’t have met the people I met and had the experiences that I have. So, yeah, we’re– it’s very dear to our hearts I think.

Dylan MinnetteDefinitely.

ALexander-Party-1024x680

We heard it from Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell that the party scene was their favorite and it was no different with the kids. They said that day was the best. It was like a real party and they spent three days filming and dancing and barbequing.  That sounds like a great day to me.  Steve and Jennifer told us about Dylan and Kerris singing a song just for them. They said it was a really special. So we asked the kids about it and they said the same thing. They also all jumped over each other trying to tell us about Dylan Minnette’s band, the Narwhals, and how awesome they are.  So check them out if you like the music in Alexander and the #VeryBadDay.  They are on the soundtrack.

  1. I am actually looking forward to watching this now. I wasn’t really thinking of renting it except for the kids when it came out on redbox. We might be seeing it in the drive in now.
