When I became a stay at home mom, who had worked her entire life, usually two jobs while going to school, I was lost. I had nothing to do besides take care of the kids and my daughter was a tiny baby so I decided to give some shows I had never had time for a chance. One of those was Revenge. Everyone had told me how great it was so I watched it and LOVED it. Emily VanCamp is amazing. She is beautiful, so talented, and the raw emotion she emitted was phenomenal. So when I heard she was going to join the Marvel Universe I was super excited. I knew she had a larger part to play in the MCU. I have seen Captain America: Civil War (it comes out May 6th mark you calendars!) and she rocks as Agent 13/Sharon Carter.
We got to interview Emily VanCamp as part of our #CaptainAmericaEvent in April. She came in and said it was so nice to see a room full of ladies. We get that a lot. I think they know we are super nice. And the first question on everyone’s mind was how did she learn to kick so much butt!
Emily VanCamp – It’s just a lot of working out really. I mean I had already sort of done some training for Revenge so it was like an easier segway into the films but you wanna go into these movies feeling really strong and feeling fit and I wanna be able to keep up really. We were wrapping Revenge while I started training for the movie which is very interesting and I kind of realized how much I should have done that for Revenge. I mean I was fit doing Revenge but I was like oh, this is another level. I’m just not really good going into it and, you know, it’s fun. I love that stuff. I was a dancer so all that physical activity’s great and sort of helps with the sequences and stuff because ultimately it’s choreography. I hope to get to do more of it!
Since she mentioned training for Revenge, we asked her about the comparison between the two characters.
Emily VanCamp – Someone asked me who would win a battle between Emily Thorn and Sharon Carter and I was really thinking about it because I think Sharon is incredibly technical and has this obvious, real training. It’s not some sensei that she had in Japan. I think Emily would win because she’s so tortured. She’s just fueled by so much anger so when she unleashes the rage it would be a really close fight. Sharon might be missing a little bit of an edge.
Like most interviews she noticed her Marvel Captain America: Civil War Agent 13 Funko Pop Vinyl and picked it up. So we asked her how she felt about having her own figure.
Emily VanCamp – I was just noticing this. I never actually saw it out of the box. It’s hilarious. I think she’s pretty cool. I mean that’s awesome. I have to get one for my mom or something. That’s really cool.
On that note we asked a really serious question. We asked her how she felt going down in history as Agent 13.
Emily VanCamp – It’s really cool. I mean being a part of this universe is a special thing especially with the movies that they’re making and how good they are. It’s cool, and I’m really happy to do it with the people I’m doing it with. As I said, everyone’s great and super talented. These movies could have been very surface level but what I love about Marvel is how they delve into the characters. They give us the freedom as well to create a version of the character that the fans will like, and it’s a fun process. The fact that people love the movies is an extra bonus.
Back to the serious questions. We were really hitting her with the hard questions there for a minute. We asked her about being a role model for young girls. She mentioned having three sisters and really wonderful people in her life.
Emily VanCamp – I always hate it when I hear actors or musicians or people in the public eye say that they have no obligation to be any sort of role model because I mean it’s not like you have an obligation – but you have a choice. And why wouldn’t you choose to empower young women and use yourself as a vehicle when you have a voice to kind of inspire that. I don’t see why you wouldn’t. I mean that’s not to say I’m always gonna play this kind of character. It’s amazing to play a kickass girl like Sharon Carter or a really tortured version of a woman when I played Emily Thorne.
She added that she wanted girls to have the best opportunities they possibly can and “if I can inspire that in the tiniest way I don’t see why I wouldn’t.”
One of our final questions was the most important since we all had our #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan shirts on. We told her that we were a group divided and asked her where she stood on the issue.
Emily VanCamp – I have to be in Team Cap! The truth is Sharon’s very torn. She’s got this struggle in this movie where she’s like sort of on the sly giving information, but trying to keep her job. So I guess for the viewers it could potentially go either way, but I think for me to say I was anything but Team Cap would be massive problems. You know, I agree with him. Watching the movie I was really trying to remove my personal connection to the character and I really get what he’s doing. I truly do.
Well there you have it. She is #TeamCap. I am #TeamIronMan. I guess we can’t be friends. But she is too cool. I am torn. I am happy having her as Sharon Carter and I am very pleased that she loves being a role model for young girls. We need all the help we can get to show women they have amazing futures out there and they can do whatever they want!
She took a picture with us before she left. The lighting was terrible in the room though. It was so bright outside that it was impossible to get a good shot. Dont forget that Captain America: Civil War comes out on May 6th! Go watch it in theaters with 200 of your closest friends. I am joking but it is really that good. I will post my review of the movie on the 6th as well.
