My favorite Christmas Tradition:

Every year my family has done the same thing with our Christmas trees. Normally it’s just the women, but the occasional man will get involved as we travel from household to household decorating. It’s a simple thing really. Pretty cheap too. Most of all, it makes the trees look unique and gives us time together doing something that brings us Christmas cheer. What do we do? We string popcorn and cranberries that then get wrapped around the trees like garlands.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t exactly a fast project or easy of the hands. It takes 2-4 hours for each tree depending on its size. We have fun doing it even with the occasional finger pokes. We normally have cheese, crackers, and wine sitting out while we string and listen to Christmas music.

Here’s what you need:

thread

needles

buttons

Long thin doll needles

Really thick thread

Buttons (we use red for cranberries and white for popcorn)

And of course, popcorn and cranberries

You string the needles, doubling up on the thread, i.e. don’t tie the thread to the needle and tie it to the button. You want only one knot and I prefer it to be on the outside of the button. That way your popcorn or cranberries won’t get stuck on the knot while you are stringing. I normally make the string my arm span in length, but if it is your first time, you may want to make them smaller. It is very easy to get the string tangled. Fill the string with either popcorn, cranberries, or both until you are a few inches from the end of the needle. You need to leave room to cut the needle off the string and to tie the string to the button of another string. I normally put each strand on the tree as they are finished so we don’t get them tangled and so you can see how many more strands you need to completely go around the tree. Now my family likes to string all the popcorn around the tree and then string all the cranberries.

However, a lot of people like to have only one garland and to make patterns using both popcorn and cranberries.
