As winter settles more fully over the country, many of us are preparing for snowy weather. Making sure you have a few emergency items in your car, checking to make sure any drafts in your home are under control, and buying winter clothing. There one other important preparation pet owners need to make- keeping their dogs pest-free for the winter.

Ticks can certainly remain perfectly healthy and happy if the temperature is above freezing. Folks in milder climates might know this, but if this is news to you, be sure you take care to protect your dogs from tick bites by using a flea and tick preventative. But even when the temperature takes a dip, fleas and ticks can survive by hiding in warm pockets of fallen leaves or grass and stay cozy through snow falls. They can even stay alive the whole winter in this manner!

If fleas and ticks manage to stay alive, they can also lay their eggs and continue the breeding cycle that can lead to infestation. They can choose a garage, a covered patio, even a stack of firewood as a place to wait out the winter, or worse, to hop onto your dog and bring the party inside.

Of course, once indoors they are able to breed and sustain themselves off your pet without a problem. And once that cycle starts, it can be hard to stop. And it can lead to more serious problems than itching- ticks can cause flea paralysis, fleas can carry worms that infect your dog, and there are other illnesses that can be transmitted from these parasites to your furry family member. Luckily, it’s an easy thing to prevent in the first place. You can keep your dog safe from fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks with a single dose of BRAVECTO® (Fluralaner). BRAVECTO is a new, fast-acting tick and flea preventative that comes as a tasty treat for your pet, straight from your vet.

BRAVECTO is different from other flea and tick preventatives in that it lasts for 12 weeks. That means fewer potentially missed doses, lowering the risk of having a flea or tick problem start. BRAVECTO can even help you remember when it’s time- you can set up reminders on their website!

It makes sense to continue the tick and flea protection for your dogs all year-round, and it’s easier than ever with BRAVECTO. And it’s available at your local vet’s, making it easy to pick up and keep on hand.
