I don’t know what September means to you but in Alabama it means football. I was born into a college football family and I have passed it to my own children. I am sure most of them could say Roll Tide before they could walk. We also watch pro ball because football is like a religion down here. You all know that I more of a hockey fan but I can’t deny my roots. My favorite part of football season is tailgate parties! I love to eat and tailgate parties are always full of good food and good friends. I was asked to talk about my tailgate traditions and sent a lovely bunch of coffee from Community Coffee. I credit them with saving me by keeping me awake during the back to school rush. Community Coffee is available for purchase at grocery stores throughout the Southeast region of the US and you can also find it online at CommunityCoffee.com. You can also check out Community Coffee on Facebook and Twitter.
I wanted to try something new with my go to recipes to bring to parties so I heard about adding coffee and bacon to chili from one of my mom groups. I mean chili=good, coffee=magic, and bacon=forever right? It was bound to be amazing. I couldn’t find a good recipe online though so I decided to wing it. I have to admit that my first batch was super spicy so only my husband liked it. I am going to use less jalapeno. This is going to be my new favorite tailgate recipe, Crockpot Bacon Chili with Coffee. Easy to make and quick to be eaten.
Ingredients:
½ lb bacon (or about 6-8 slices), cut in chunks
½ hamburger meat
½ pork sausage
1 onion, finely diced
1 bell pepper, diced
1 small jalapeno, diced
2 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp chili powder
Kosher salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
1 can of roasted tomatoes (14 oz, you can find the kind with chilies & peppers in it which adds even more flavor)
16oz can tomato sauce
8oz can tomato paste
3 – 4 tbsp ground coffee (I used Community Coffee Dark Roast)
8 oz of water
Directions:
Brown hamburger meat and sausage, drain. Add to crockpot.
Cook bacon according to directions. Chop into chunks and add to crockpot. Keep bacon grease.
Use bacon grease to saute onion, jalapeno, and bell pepper. Add to crock pot.
Add the rest of the ingredients to the crockpot and cook on high 4 hours or low 8 hours. More water can be added if it seems dry but 8 oz worked well for me.

We love chili, so does the coffee just give it a smoky dark flavor, a jot of caffeine? I’m trying to imagine what coffee would do for chili.

I am not a fan of the flavor of any coffee. I know, strange since millions of people love it so much. I do like the smell of it when I walk into a room and it is brewing.
