A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest
A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra.
Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world.
The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl’s trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.

When I first read the description of this book, I immediately thought it was the type of book I grew up on. I used to trade out books with my mom and dad which really means I stole them and then pestered them to buy more. They were books of legend and magic. David Eddings, Robert Asprin, Robert E. Howard, and many many more. So reading about Penndarius and his very wry sense of humor was like being a teenager again. He completely fit with the scholars in all my favorite fantasy books. The importance of what him and his traveling companions are doing and why seems to hit home but it also seems like he is really innocent to the world and all its evils. His character is very naive and I think Soren gets a bit tired of that.
I think each character is very well rounded out and its amazing how each character had a very strong presence. No one was over-shadowed even secondary characters. The fighting scenes were just amazing as well. They were so descriptive that I could practically see and hear it in my head. This book could easily be made into a movie because of how real it seems while reading it. I think my favorite part of the book was the extras at the top of each chapter. I love things like that which help you get into the world of the book. It had quotes from books, scrolls, older characters, etc and it is just amazing to me how much thought Herrick Erickson-Brigl put into creating his world. I highly recommend this book to the fantasy book loving crowds especially to people who love books with great fighting scenes! Honestly there wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book except the fact that now I cannot wait for book two.
