Thorpe who wrote the highly acclaimed book, Your Mark on the World, is a collection of articles about family financial planning that originally appeared at FamilyHow.com. It is not the type of book I would really read on a normal day. However, at this point in my life, this is the type of thing I need. We just became adults so fast. We have kids, a mortgage, two paid for cars (and a new car note coming when the new baby comes because we have to get a bigger one), and lots of student loan debt. I read Devin D. Thorpe’s Your Mark on the World book so I knew this one was going to be great.
I knew we needed help the day that we got our first notices for our student loan debt. My husband and I graduated a year apart with our Bachelors degrees and we both have two associates degrees. I went to a private college so even though I did qualify for some government help, it didnt come close to covering my whole tuition. My husband came from a wealthy family so he didnt qualify at all for government grants but he did qualify for voc rehab help since he has a learning disability. So it could have been so much worse. There are so many great tips in this book like how to get out of debt and stay out of debt. I also like the tips on how to pay for your children’s college education. I dont want my kids to have to go through what Big E and I are going through now. Some of the tips are repeated throughout the book but that just means that the are important enough to go across the board. How to ask your boss for a raise is another section of the book that I shared with my father who seems to not care he hasnt had a raise in years.
