Your Mark On The World combines inspiring stories of ordinary people doing remarkable things to make the world a better place with practical advice to empower anyone to give more to a cause (charity, non-profit or social venture) without giving up a career or family.

I got a chance to read this book through Promotional Book Tours and I am happy I did. I love inspirational books. I always feel so energized after reading them because it makes me think I can go out and do anything.  Like Botevy. Despite the horrors she faced as a small child during Pol Pot’s killing reign, stepping over dead bodies, hiding from soldiers, protecting her siblings, all while trying to survive the Khmer Rouge. Despite everything she had to go through not just to grow up but to survive and to keep her family intact, she became something bigger. After becoming a mother, she became a teacher and went on to create an orphanage in Phnom Penh. They do not even make enough to cover the food there but somehow her and other volunteers work to give those children a better life.

Its stories like this that make me question all the mediocracy in my life. So many people who overspend their money each month on things they dont need while there are people out there that devote their lives to helping others. There was a story in the book of a man who left his career to go help leprocy patients.  Who does that?  People who care more for others than they do ‘stuff’.  This book is also intersected with tips and ways you can help your own life.

The book answers these questions:

How do I get out of debt and stay out of debt?  Which charity or cause do I choose to make my donation? How do I decide where to volunteer? How can our family plan a volunteer vacation? How can I save money for retirement?  How much should I contribute to my 401k? Can I use Mint to manage my budget? How to retire early enough to devote healthy years to volunteering?

I try to volunteer when I can. I have mentioned many times I used to be president of a community service organization in college. I still try to do what I can, when I can.  However, after reading this, I am going to start taking some of the tips. I want to be able to have a good retirement and still be able to give money every year to the charities I support.  I want to be able to make the trips I cant now because of work and small children to help in other countries or even in my own country.  I would love to be up north right now helping the hurricane victims but I can’t if I want to keep my job.  Devin D. Thorpe put together a great collection of stories that go well with the tips and strategies for making your mark on the world.
