Did you ever have a crazy story that you couldn’t wait to tell your children when they were older up about your and your spouse? Or one of those stories that you randomly mention that makes your spouse smile every time or shake their heads at the craziness? Well, I do and it revolves around one of my favorite stores, Murphy USA.
When my husband and I first started dating we fought all the time! I grew up poor, worked two jobs, was getting my college degree, and had been a single mom for 4 years to Little M. He was a rich kid who worked 10 hours a week for his friend’s dad and was as liberal as they come. So you can see where we would clash a bit. Every time we fought I was always convinced it would be the end of it but I wasnt ready to let go. So I would storm out and drive down to the Murphy USA and sit in the parking lot. I always though that if he didnt call me back, I would call him after an hour. Sometimes I would be there 10 minutes, sometimes an hour but they never asked me to leave. In fact, they were completely amazing about the whole thing.
The cashiers at Murphy USA got to know me pretty well and they would always offer me advice without being condescending. When I came in for a drink or snack (pouting is hard work you know), they would smile and ask me what happened even if I had just been in there the day before. They saved my relationship. They really did because if I had not had a place to sit and cool off, I would have went home which was an hour away. So most of those make ups would have never happened. I pass by that Murphy USA occasionally when I am leaving work and I always smile to myself when I think about how young Big E and I were. None of the cashiers that I knew and liked still work there but Murphy USA will always hold a place in my heart! And in case you were wondering, Big E always called me first to apologize.
