Queen of Katwe Blu-ray Review #QueenofKatwe

Many of you may remember when I went to Los Angeles last September to promote the Queen of Katwe movie and walk the red carpet. If not you can view my posts on my trip here. It was a lovely movie and I quite enjoyed every minute of it. I recently received the Queen of Katwe Blu-ray to review which I was super glad about since my family had not seen the movie yet. I love chess and when I found out what this movie was about I knew I was going to love it. I even bought the book to go in depth in their lives. Home audiences will cheer for Disney’s Queen of Katwe, which has earned widespread critical acclaim. Based on the vibrant true story of a young girl (Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Uganda whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. It is a remarkable story of perseverance against all odds that will leave viewers feeling humbled and inspired.  According to director Mira Nair, “The triumph of the human spirit is not to weep for what we don’t have but to focus on what we do have and allow that to take us to a place we never imagined possible.” Disney’s heartwarming and triumphant tale arrives home on Digital HD on Jan. 10 and Blu-ray™ on Jan. 31

Here is one of the quotes I used to describe how I felt about the movie.

Its amazing to me that this movie is based on the real life Phiona Mutesi. We got to meet her and the real Robert Katende. And most of the cast are from the same area in Katwe. To see the struggles she has faced, that all of them face is heart wrenching. And to know that even after the book and the movie many of the actors will go back to that life. The life where something as simple as rain can destroy everything you have worked your life for. Where walking miles everyday just to sell corn is the norm just to be able to feed your family. The actors in this movie were amazing especially considering that many of them had never acted before or if they had it was very small parts. Madine Nalwanga is a newcomer and she portrayed Phiona so perfectly. And Lupita Nyong’o soared as her mom Harriet. She has this thousand yard stare that just blows you away because you know that she is such a strong woman and is wonderful in the role of Harriet.

The bonus features made me want to cry even more. In the book you find out more about Robert Katende's life and his point of view and I like how they feature some of that in the bonus features. Oh my goodness and the flood scene? I have seen this movie four times now. Three times in theaters and once at home. I knew it was coming and I still cried and was so anxious. Then I watched the extended flood scene. Wow. I wish they could have used all of  that. So many life lessons in one movie. Chess is like that. Its a game where you have to think ahead and learn from your mistakes. I hope everyone gives this movie a chance because its beautiful and heart warming.
